Burials

WPA – 1937 Anoka County Cemetery Survey…

The West Saint Francis Cemetery is also called the Oak View Cemetery.

This cemetery is located in the southwest corner of the southwest quarter, of the southeast quarter, of section twenty five, consisting of twenty rods by twenty rods, in Saint Francis township, Anoka county. This plot of land is still undeveloped.

Burials were made in the open timberland, possibly as early as the year 1860. No records were kept for these burials, as relatives simply dig a grave and interment was made.

In 1900, a collection of three hundred dollars was made. An association was formed, a plat was drawn. One acre was well fenced and a sexton appointed

There are now over sixty monuments and markers. The grass is cut each year before Decoration Day.

Records of Cemetery plat, 1900 to date, all dates entered on plat. In these records are listed all that were known.

The sexton says that when he digs new graves, he frequently finds the bones of some former burial. The Cemetery Plat is kept by William F. Sandy, rural route, Bethel, Minnesota.

There are two men with a military record buried in this cemetery, whose names appear in the records. The names are: Beckwith Barnes, First Ohio Cavalry, Company H, a private, and Peter Joes, One hundred forty-fifth Ohio Infantry, Company K, he also was a private.
